* The first step to buying horses like a pro is to get one to accompany you. If it is your first time buying a horse, you can get scammed easily if you go alone. A person buying and selling horses can pull all sorts of tricks to make you buy something that you will regret later. Even if you know your way around horses, you can still gain a lot, when you buy horses, by having someone go with you. Have them talk to the seller so that you can inspect the horse freely.
* Know what to look for. Inspect the surroundings as closely as you would the horse itself. Is the stable clean or is it full of manure? Are the caretakers attentive to the need of the other horses? If you see a sick horse in the premises, even if the one you are looking at is perfectly healthy, reconsider your buying decision.
* Never buy horses without a test ride. But before riding it, ask someone to walk it around. Observe any irregularities in the animal’s step. A minute imperfection when walking can get major on a full gallop. Check each hoof and see that it is shod properly. Look for excessive scarring and lumps. These are possible signs of abuse.
* Have someone else ride the horse first. Observe again its gait. Also see if it is relaxed or anxious. A tightly-wound horse is bad for the rider as well as itself. Of you are not confident that you can ride it, look for another one. There are lots of other places that buy and sell horses. Never buy a horse feeling rushed, so schedule a whole day when you buy horses.
* Your first ride should seal the deal. You should know immediately that a horse is for you. If you have any apprehensions, don’t think that you can make it better as you ride it more. Horses have personalities just like humans and rider and steed should mesh. Buy horses with these tips in mind and never go wrong.
