How to Buy Horses for the First Time
Buying a horse can be an emotional experience, and to a certain extent, it should be. Horses are intelligent creatures capable of displaying personalities and there is nothing more gratifying than bonding with an animal companion. But in this also lies the caveat that most people who buy horses ignore. Because horses have individual differences, even those coming from the same breed, you have to find the perfect horse for your particular riding style and experience level.
When buying your first horse, you have to schedule ample time for viewing. People take the time to scout around and thoroughly inspect a car before buying it, the attitude should be the same in buying a living, breathing, animal that would be with you for years to come. Many people buy horses based solely on the looks of the animal. Sticking with the car analogy, many choose based on color, but few choose based how the thing runs. Same with a horse, you should look at how it carries itself and base your purchase decision off that.
A great way to remove, or at least balance out the emotions of buying a horse for the first time, is to bring someone with more experience than you. Your riding trainer has spent more time around horses than you probably ever will and they have seen it all. The reason behind the ample viewing time is that you never want to be rushed with such a major decision. People who buy and sell horses might pressure you with sales banter or some promos and you shouldn’t fall for these tactics. Always buy horses when you are relaxed.
Before even going for your first ride, you have to do some preliminary checks first. Have the seller walk the horse around. Observe if it has an even gait, and more importantly, see if it is calm or anxious. Next, have it ridden by someone else. You don’t what to risk getting bucked off by an untested horse. Consult with your expert about each observation and heed his warnings. After you have been thoroughly convinced that it might be the horse for you, this is the only time that you take a ride.
Now, let the emotions take over. You have to feel a connection with the horse. Especially if it’s your first one, you have to enjoy every moment with it. If everything checks out, it’s time to do the paperwork and take your new companion home.
